“Having a variety that performs well in the early segment is important

A number of years ago, I started planting asparagus at our family business, which I run together with my parents. My love for ‘white gold,’ as the plant is known, started when I was undertaking an internship at an asparagus grower for my training. And that love never faded. Our company, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary next year, has already grown potatoes and strawberries. I thought asparagus would be a valuable addition to the range thanks to its delicious taste, as well as the fact that it can be grown early in the year. We've been growing asparagus for eight years now. Renewing the company is very important to us, and we are at the forefront when it comes to testing new varieties. In the past, we've often trialed BASF varieties. Our regular contact at BASF, who is a pleasure to work with, regularly visits us to see how things are going. We discuss the cultivation process and exchange data. I also monitor the quality of our asparagus with a computer.

Since last year, we have been trialing Nunhems variety Robbems F1. Because we also cultivate strawberries, we were looking for an asparagus variety that can be grown early in the year. That way, we can focus wholly on asparagus at the start and dedicate our full attention to strawberries later in the year. This is how we guarantee the quality of our products. Up to now, Robbems F1 has met this need perfectly, as this variety is particularly suitable for early cultivation. Having a breed variety that performs well in the early segment is important, as is having a good plant head  tip closing and the thickness of the asparagus. In terms of its size, Robbems F1 stands head and shoulders above the other breedsvarieties. This is in line with our wishes and our customers’ wishes. We only supply our customers with AA-level quality asparagus. Robbems F1 delivers on that quality.”
