Gourds Farmer Success Stories

Rushaan - Easy to Harvest, Easier to Sell!

With a flourishing green field spanning across 2 acres, Omprakash Patidar is a forward-thinking farmer from Barwet, Madhya Pradesh. Since 2020, he has been cultivating Rushaan after years of successful experience with US 1315. Both, Rushaan & US 1315 are bitter gourd varieties by Nunhems. When it comes to Rushaan, he speaks highly of the fruit quality, size, and high yield.

“Rushaan has a very high yield. The weight & size of the fruits are superior,” he said. Given the size & density of the fruit, an individual can pick higher quantities in a single cycle. It helps to reduce labour costs profiting him further.

Rushaan falls in the medium spiny segment of bitter gourds. It is well known for its intermediate resistance to Leaf Curl Virus & Powdery Mildew. When asked, Omprakash said he faced no virus issues since the first sowing. “Even if the picking cycle is delayed by a day or two, the fruit remains unaffected,” he added.

"Selling Rushaan has always been easy," Omprakash said, especially with the demand of the medium spiny segment growing in India.

Being a progressive farmer, he believes in empowering his fellow farmers with the best practices & advanced technical methodologies. He actively recommends Rushaan & other seed varieties of Nunhems to them. He also speaks highly of the technical guidance he receives from the Nunhems sales team. He says, “They visit my farm often, share information on crops & educate about the market dynamics. I am extremely thankful for the Nunhems team!”

US 1315 - Brought Prosperity to My Home

Devendra is a veteran farmer hailing from the mineral-rich plains of Chhattisgarh. His association with Nunhems is a tale of trust, confidence and expertise. Talking about US 1315, a bitter gourd variety by Nunhems, he delightfully mentioned the consistent green colour of the produce. “Looking at the colour alone, people tend to buy US 1315”, he said.

US 1315 is a high-yielding variety. It has firm, sturdy vines and the fruits bear an eye-catching dark green colour. Its prolific bearing capacity makes it a market favourite. “The sale of US 1315 in the market is unprecedented!” Devendra exclaimed. He went on to say, “We are a group of 16 farmers, all of us have trust on US 1315. It is our first choice”.

Averaging a fruit length of 8-10 cms, US 1315 has great shipping & keeping quality. It also has an early maturity cycle that promises a high yield. Devendra mentioned a record yield of 14 tonnes last year. US 1315 has thus, generated massive profits and exponential growth.

Elated with the experience, he proudly said, “US 1315 has made me debt-free!” With his willingness to adopt new techniques and a lionhearted approach to experiment with new varieties, Devendra’s association with Nunhems grows stronger by the day.

“I keep on trying new varieties, and every single variety of Nunhems has generated great profits! Not a single variety has disappointed me”, he added.

Anokhi - The Key to Higher Profits!

Harikesh Saini is a seasoned farmer from Karora, Uttar Pradesh. His association with Nunhems goes back to 2014. He grows Anokhi, a variety of bottle gourd by Nunhems. Grateful for the seed, he calls it an “excellent variety that has generated a lot of profits in just two acres.”

Anokhi has an early maturity cycle. It is known for its continuous and prolific bearing. In Harikesh’s case, the yield increased exponentially after each picking cycle. Initially, the produce was just enough to be sold in the local mandi but soon, he entered the nearby markets in Delhi & Ghazipur.

Talking about aesthetics, he calls Anokhi an “extremely beautiful bottle gourd.” It flaunts an attractive green colour & at a fruit length of 30-35 cm, it is neither too long nor too short. It has become the market favourite.

Anokhi's high yield has been the constant point of discussion in Karora. Since traders & farmers found it hard to believe that Harikesh was able to procure such a high yield in just two acres, he had multiple visits from traders & neighbouring farmers to confirm his claim. A high-yielding variety  that bears beautiful fruits, Anokhi fetches  higher price. With the increased influx of money, Harikesh purchased a tractor.

“I am extremely happy with Anokhi & Nunhems,” he says. He also spoke highly of Nunhems’ muskmelon variety Madhuraja, calling it the best seed in the segment! Fond of Nunhems, he urges his neighbouring farmers to sow Nunhems’ seeds as well.

Amanshri -  An inspiration for entire Village

In his 5-acre land , Vijay grows cucumber, dry chilli, bottle gourd and bitter gourd. A seasoned farmer with more than 20 years of experience, he has been using Amanshri, a bitter gourd variety of Nunhems for more than a decade. Calling Amanshri “a constant source of high profits & growth,” his experience is distinct and worth sharing.

Amanshri has almost double the yield as compared to other varieties. Vijay calls it a “variety that gives the trader what he is looking for.” By changing the picking cycles, he can harvest either a small or long bitter gourd that meets the traders' expectations.

“Our village is far from the city & difficult to reach. Since Amanshri, traders locate our village to procure the fruit,” he shared.

Characterized by firm spines and natural green colour, Amanshri has a prolific bearing capacity & a high yield. In each picking cycle, Vijay was able to harvest an average of 700 kgs of bitter gourd. He said that by the end of three months, the yield increased to a massive 1500-1600 kgs in a single picking cycle.

With a continuous trail of success stories, Amanshri has become irreplaceable in Palghar. Such is the popularity that every farmer in the village sows Amanshri. “In the last 20 years, I have never seen such a variety. It has introduced our village to the outer world,” says Vijay. “A farmer who used to walk miles now owns a two-wheeler. Amanshri is inspiring everyone in our village to become a farmer!”
